Therapy for Menopause and Perimenopause.

Menopause can be a time of empowerment, self-discovery, growth, joy, relief, and positive change.

But, let’s be honest, it might not always feel like that when you’re in the middle of it and your hair is falling out, you want to kill everyone, your body no longer feels like yours, and no-one around you gets it!

Menopause is the term used to describe the period of time in a woman’s life when her periods change and eventually stop, and there is a decrease her in oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. These hormonal shifts can bring significant physical, emotional, and psychological transformations. Symptoms can last for many years and, for some women, they can feel really difficult to live with.

As well as dealing with the physical and psychological symptoms of perimenopause and menopause, you might also be experiencing deep loss and grief as you navigate the significant changes happening to you. It might feel difficult to cope with the emotionally complex losses sometimes associated with menopause. You might be feeling:

The loss of the fertile you - Perimenopause and menopause means a reduction and then loss of natural fertility. It might feel difficult to let go of your reproductive years.

The loss of the body you know - Menopause brings physical changes to your body, skin, and hair. You might also have had surgery to remove your reproductive organs.

The loss of who you were - Menopause can challenge your identity, sense of self, purpose, and worth. You might be wondering what you want from life now.

The loss of your youth - Menopause can bring a transition into embracing your wisdom and experience, but leaving your youth behind might feel painful.

The loss of relationships - Menopause can change intimacy, and the myriad of symptoms can cause stress and challenges with connection and communication in relationships.

Loss of feeling ‘on it’ - Menopause can bring changes in cognitive function; issues with concentration, brain fog, and memory problems, can impact you at work and home.

Hormonal fluctuations can lead to mood swings, anxiety, and low mood, which can amplify feelings of loss and grief, making things feel more emotionally turbulent.

Navigating perimenopause and menopause involves acknowledging and processing these feelings of change, loss, and grief. It can be a transformative journey that invites you to explore new aspects of yourself and find ways to embrace this new phase of life with resilience and self-compassion.
